Mykki Blanco @ Green Door Store, Mon 28 Jan

New York gender bending rapper Mykki Blanco gears up to hit Green Door Store with his/her rave-driven punk music.
Often mentioned alongside a group of largely disconnected New York artists under the umbrella ‘queer rap’ (see Le1f and Zebra Katz), the transgender Michael Quattlebaum, through her no less weird moniker Mykki Blanco, has really started shaking up hip hop conventions – though she doesn’t see her music as hip hop at all. Previously a performance artist, Blanco still brings a huge amount of theatricality to her performances – touring last year with brutal hip hop group Death Grips, she has become infamous for provocatively combining hyper-masculinity and violent swagger with her drag image.
The music itself isn’t far off the peers she’s often lumped in with – aggressive, brooding “EDM”-influenced productions with rattling sub bass and kaleidoscopic synthesisers. Like Death Grips, her music, and her performance energy, are so super-exaggerated that it becomes a heady mixture of infectiously manic and comically highly strung. Altogether, sharing Green Door Store’s intimate space with such a charismatic force and her blistering music will be an experience not to miss – especially given the ticket price.
Support comes from promising London singer-producer duo, and their catchy brand of glitchy R’n’B
