In 1605 a group of Catholic conspirators, one of these being Guy Fawkes, plotted to blow up King James I of England and VI of Scotland and his nobles during the State opening of Parliament on November 5, but the assassination failed. The English commemorate the anniversary every year with bonfires, fireworks and by burning the effigy of Guy Fawkes. The bonfires are set alight to celebrate the safety of the King but some still wonder whether it's honouring the attempt to do away with the government. We'll let you decide. The Sussex Bonfire Societies hold a series of bonfire festivities in the county, the largest one being in Lewes. Check out www.lewesbonfirecouncil.org.uk for more information.
