Citizens! have been cooking up a pop-flavoured storm to unleash on The Haunt on Monday, November 19.
The five piece band are touring Europe showing off their debut album ‘Here We Are’ but now are ready to make Brighton rock and say they “can’t wait to come back.” Thom Rhoades, the guitarist, says: “We’re a London band so Brighton shows always feel like a day trip to us. Get in the van and stick your sunglasses on.”
Their album was produced by Franz Ferdinand’s lead singer Alex Kapranos, and they were recently signed to French Label Kitsuné. Because of this, Thom says they have played some great venues in Paris, which has always felt “like a home away from home.” The band have an ever-growing and spreading following, having been named “new band of the day” by The Guardian just a year ago. Their upbeat tunes, such as “True Romance” and “Reptile,” are catchy and punchy, with melodious vocals that stick in your head. They have an unashamedly pop sound, as Thom explains the importance of genres for him: “If you know what type of song you want to write- you instantly have a set of rules and sounds to guide you. Whether or not you stick to those rules is another matter.” In line with their aim to “push pop in all directions” Thom says musical goals for the future could include some collaborations, as “you can learn a lot from the way other people work.”
Their live shows do justice to the energy of their songs and you will not be able to resist a dance.
Citizens! plus guests play The Haunt, 7.30 pm Monday November 19.
